19 May - City Rowers remember talented coach
Peterborough City rowers remembered coach Bill Parker in a boat naming ceremony held at the Thorpe Meadows club last Sunday.Bill Parker sadly died aged 64 last September after a long battle with cancer. He had continued coaching and rowing whilst undergoing treatment and had coached until the last few months of his illness.
In a ceremony attended by club members, friends and family, the new coxed-eight rowing boat was named 'sill Parker by his son Doug, who poured champagne over the bows of the boat. Doug remarked that Peterborough City Rowing Club was 'sart of Dad's life and the club closest to his heart's
Bill's no-nonsense approach, using modern coaching techniques pushed crews to bring out the best in themselves. He was not only a fine technical coach but also expected from his rowers the same dedication and hard work that he put in. He coached Peterborough crews to victory at Women's Under 23 National championships, National Veterans, Henley Veterans, and coached crews to qualify for Royal Henley including quarter-finalist Quadruple sculls in the Queen Mother Challenge Cup in 1998, and in 2004 a coxed eight to the last sixteen in the Thames Cup. He also coached crews from the Cambridge and Oundle.
He was also competitive in his own right, his achievements included winning the World Masters Veteran D coxless pairs in Cologne in 1992 and Veteran E quadruple sculls in 2002 in Prague.
The eight was then taken for it's first paddle as the 'sill Parker on the rowing lake with a mixed crew, stroked by his World Master's rowing partner Neville Walker, members from the 2004 Henley eight Steve Cranfield, Matt Hunt, Steve Tait, Glen Gilbert, Chris Davey, and Women Veteran National champions Hayley Marsters and Jo Canton, coxed by Charlie Horner, all who'se benefited from his dedication to the sport.
10 May - Eight wins at Leicester Regatta
Peterborough City Rowing Club had their first regatta wins of the season at Leicester Regatta last Sunday [7 May 2006], with junior athletes leading the way with seven of them.Win number eight was an all-Peterborough final. Senior rower James Clark won his Novice single sculls against his double sculls partner Graham Timms. After fortunately missing each other in the preceding rounds of the competition they met in the final, which was decided by one length over the 700m course.
World-Class-Start sculling Junior, Emily Harrington won her Women's Senior 4 single sculls against Burton Leander and then joined with Philippa Neill, Sophie Walters and Kelly Brown to beat Star Club in the Women's Senior 4 quadruple sculls. Philippa Neill also 'sid the double by winning her Women's Junior 14 single sculls final against Knott of Pengwern Rowing Club.
The Fox brothers notched up one apiece with Adam Fox beating Byrne from Leicester Rowing Club in the Junior 12 single sculls and James Fox winning the Junior 14 single sculls against Burton Leander. Tom Chung beat another Burton Leander sculler, Needham, to win his Junior 13 single sculls final.
In the double sculls, Steven Blades and Will Stafford won their Junior 15 event against Pengwern Rowing Club.
19 Apr - Four wins for City
Bedford Fours and Small Boats Head
Peterborough City Rowing Club had four wins against tough competition at Bedford Fours and Small Boats Head, last Sunday (10 April). On a day that started out in sunshine and ended in hail and sleet, it was quite a testing day for the competitors. Peterborough's winning Women's Senior 3 quadruple sculls crew of Hayley Marsters, Jo Canton, Ruth Turnock and Anita Carter finished the 2000m course in 7 minutes 33 seconds, five seconds ahead of runners up St. Neots/Lea composite. Pete Dolby, Ian Davis, Ross Starkey and Stuart Speechley, coxed by Rory Ford, won the Men's Veteran C coxed fours event in 7 minutes 11 seconds, nine seconds ahead of runners up St Neots. Men's Veteran B coxed fours Phil Wadlow, Rob Smith, Hugo Spiegl, Pete Harris and cox Rory Ford beat Gravesend Rowing Club by six seconds to win in a time of 7 minutes 43 seconds. And in the Men's Senior 2 single sculls, Daniel Bream, competing in his first race after a lay-off with injury, beat Robb from Bedford by eight seconds to finish in a time of 7 minutes 42 seconds.
