11 Oct - Fox and Howell are leaders of the pack

Pairs Head of the River

Peterborough City Rowing Club had a victory in the Pairs Head of the River race held on the Tideway in London last Saturday [6 October 2007].

City sculler James Fox and St Neots-based sculler Sam Howell won the Junior 16 double sculls event in a time of 13 minutes 22.08 seconds on the 4000m Thames-course, between the University Stone at Mortlake and Hammersmith Bridge. They were 16 seconds ahead of second-placed Tiffin School and beat 12 other crews in their event. This is the second-year running that the duo, who were finalists in the junior quadruple sculls at Henley Royal Regatta this year, have won this event.

The following day at St Neots Small Boats Head, Peterborough had two wins on the 2600m course. Ollie Salonna and Sam Tuck won the Junior 15 double sculls in a time of 10 minutes 28 seconds, with National Champion Tom Chung winning his Junior 15 single sculls race in the same time. However, Chung showed remarkable consistency by registering the same time for his earlier Senior 4 single sculls event as his winning Junior 15 single sculls time.

Sam Howell also continued his winning ways by finishing in the fastest crew of the day, a St. Neots Junior 16 quadruple scull, which finished the Great Ouse course in 9 minutes 8 seconds.

20 Sep - Record-breaking win at Boston Marathon

Peterborough City Rowing Club had a record-breaking win, and set another two records at the Boston Marathon held on Sunday 16 September.

The Junior under 15 coxed quadruple scull smashed the previous record set in 2005 by nearly 23 minutes to finish the 31-mile course in a time of 4 hours 1 minute 25 seconds. The crew of Sam Tuck, Tom Chung, Ed Rippon, Ollie Salonna and cox George Chung finished just under 30 minutes faster than second-placed Queen Elizabeth High School, and were over half an hour ahead of third placed Yarm School and the fourth and fifth-placed crews.
The fastest Peterborough finisher was the composite Mixed Veteran C double scull crew of Jo Canton and Tim Ellis, who was racing for the RAF. They finished 17th overall in a time of 3 hours 52 minutes 47 seconds and beat the previous 2005 record by 7 minutes in a tough cross-head wind. They were unfortunate not to have other competitors in their event as they were the fastest mixed double of the day, and so missed out on getting a winners medal.

The Veteran B coxless four crew of Angus Marshall, Pete Harris, Hugo Spiegl and Bob Smith set the record for this event by rowing the Lincoln to Boston course in 4 hours 21 minutes 8 seconds, but again had no competition in their event.

The Mixed Senior 2 quadruple scull of Nicola Bobyk, Sophie Walters, Ian Rist and Tom Kisby broke the previous record by over 11 minutes finishing in 4 hours 14 minutes 56 seconds but were third in their event with the winners York City slashing the record by over 41 minutes.

The winning Junior under 15 coxed quadruple scull brought home the 95th win of the season for Peterborough City Rowing Club and have just received SportsAid Foundation grants – the next Peterborough SportsAid lunch will be on Friday 5th October.
