News - 2008 Season
26 Dec - The Annual Boxing Day Football Match
Maintaining a long tradition going back to the 1950's members of PCRC attended Peterborough Rugby Club on Boxing Day morning for the annual football match.
A team of 17, lead by Chairman John Canton, produced some surprisingly good football for a bunch of rowers in the first half and Peter Hall scored a cracking goal volleying with his left foot - he even claims that he aimed at the goal! At half time the score was 3:1 to the rugby club but the match was closer than the score suggests.
In the second half the greater numbers of the rugby club started to tell and our players started to tire. Despite the best efforts of David Clow, who scored a second goal fo PCRC, and the rest of the team a run of goals by the opposition resulted in a final score of about 9 or 10:2. Greater numbers rather than greater skill counted in the end but a good time was had by all.
Excellent debut performances from Tim and Henry Lloyd, David Clow, Mike and James Marshall and John Cameron. Alex Florance may have been the smallest on the pitch but he played like a terrier showing no fear against burly rugger lads.
After some liquid refreshment in the bar, the crocodile was liberated from the Ladies Toilets by Angus Marshall!
29 Nov - Four at Soar
Head of the Soar, Loughborough
The club had a successful trip to Loughborough with four wins at the Head of the Soar.Matt Barrows, Mark Pocock and cox Ella Lamming joined with Leicester rowers Alex Stephenson-Brown and S. Andrews to win the Men’s Senior 3 coxed four on the 3000m upstream course. Ella Lamming also steered the Men’s Veteran C coxed four crew of Steve Ackerman, Joe Smith, Neil Elder and Keith Blackman to victory in their event.
Jo Canton also had two wins. Her return to single sculls racing after a nine-year gap saw her beat her Women’s Veteran C opponent by a minute and she also won in the Mixed Veteran C double sculls with Lincoln Rowing Centre’s Bruce Margetts.
23 Nov - Five wins over wintry weekend
Kingston Small Boats Head and Star Head
The wintry weather didn't stop Peterborough City Rowing Club from competing and winning at the weekend. In cold, dry, windy conditions on Saturday there were three second places at Kingston Head and in rather wetter icy conditions on Sunday at Star Head, the club had five wins.
In Kingston, there were good sculling performances against strong competition on the 4.8km Thames course. Sam Tuck was second in the Junior 16 single sculls event behind Bradbury of Thames Rowing Club in a time of 19 mins 25.3 secs. Tim Ellis racing Veteran C single sculls finished in 19 mins 48.8 secs, 19 secs behind Mitchell from Wycliffe College Boat Club. Women’s Veteran C double scullers Joan Heath and Anita Carter finished in a time of 21 mins 1.3 secs, 16 seconds faster than their Women’s Veteran D Kingston Rowing Club opponents in the Women’s Veteran C/D double sculls event. However, after the age handicap was applied their lead was not enough and so the win went to the older, Kingston scullers. In Bedford at Star Head, three wins were notched up by Graham Barks. First in the coxed Veteran D four with Pete Essex, Steve Tuck, Dave Truss and coxed by Lewis Tuck (7 mins 25secs), then in the Veteran D double sculls with Pete Essex, with his third in the Veteran C double sculls with Dave Truss.
The Junior squad braved the horrendous conditions too, with Will Hayes and Chris DeFreitas beating Broxbourne and Oundle Town crews to win the Junior 13 double sculls in 10 mins 45 secs. The Women’s Junior 14 coxed quadruple scull crew of Meghan Lawless, Gemma Titchmarsh, Eloise Austin, Lucille Kenny and cox Serena Ward easily beat Bedford Modern School by over 1 ¼ minutes to finish in 8 mins 33 secs. Meghan Lawless was also second in the Women’s J14 single sculls, just two seconds behind Taylor from Broxbourne.
25 Oct - Four wins at Huntingdon Head
Peterborough City Rowing Club had 12 crews racing at the Huntingdon Head of the River on Saturday and returned with 4 wins.Experienced veterans Pete Essex and Graham Barks started the Winter racing season strongly with 3 category wins. They won the veteran D (average age 50) coxless pairs in a time of 17mins. 3secs. for the 4,500m course. They then took the win in same age group for double sculls and finally teamed up with Steve Tuck, Dave Truss and cox Lewis Tuck to win the veteran D coxed fours in a time of 15mins 39secs.
The Club’s fourth win came from junior Sam Tuck who won the under 16 single sculls in 17mins 28secs. A time which placed him as the second fastest single sculler in the event.
Other strong performances came from womens double scullers Anita Carter and Joan Heath and veteran H (average age 65) double scullers Brian Hawden and David Rowe who both finished second in their events.
07 Sep - Golden Girls at World Masters Regatta
FISA World Masters 2008, Trakai, Lithuania
Joan Heath, Jo Canton and Hayley Marsters won gold medals at the World Masters Regatta held in Trakai, Lithuania from the 4th until 7th September.
Joan Heath and Jo Canton won the Women’s Veteran D double sculls event in style leading from an excellent start and finishing over 8 seconds ahead of the second-placed international composite crew Fredensborg RK, from Denmark, and Kingston Rowing Club, from Great Britain. They also beat crews from Germany, Russia and the USA in the event where each crew’s average age had to be 50 years old or over.
Jo Canton’s second gold with Hayley Marsters was a much closer affair in the Women’s Veteran C coxed eight race (average age of 43 years old or over). The Latvians from Riga Rowers Club and the Great Britain crew, comprising Peterborough, Inverness, Leicester, Sons of the Thames, Strathclyde Park, X-Press and Thames rowing clubs, pulled away from the Irish, German and International crews shortly after the start. At 500m the Latvians led by just a third of a second but with 250m to go the British crew pushed for home to win by just 1.24 seconds.
The girls also had further good results with Joan Heath just missing out on second place in her Veteran F single sculls to finish third, and Jo Canton and Hayley Marsters finishing third in their Veteran C coxless pairs and in their Veteran C coxed fours with Leicester Rowing Club, coxed by BTC Southampton.
The regatta for veterans is raced over a 1000m course in a different country each year, attracting crews from all over the world.
07 Sep - Ed wins at Autumn Washout
Cambridge Autumn Regatta
While Lithuania basked in sunshine it was a different story for City rowers on Sunday at Cambridge Autumn regatta. The regatta was abandoned after thunder and lightning suspended racing during the finals. Junior sculler Ed Rippon was the only Peterborough winner, beating the Marlow Rowing Club sculler by just one foot in the Men’s Senior 4 single sculls. The only other Peterborough crew able to race their final before the storm disrupted the event was the Peterborough/Newark composite Women’s Senior 4 coxed four, who lost to Cambridge 99 Rowing Club. The abandonment left many city finalists unable to finish their final regatta of the season with a win – they did, however, get a good soaking.
27 Jul - Nineteen wins at St Neots
St Neots Regatta
The Club had nineteen wins at St Neots Regatta at the weekend.
Six wins were notched up by Veteran rowers Graham Barks and Pete Essex. In the Veteran D double sculls they beat Maidstone Invicta Rowing Club on Saturday and Broxbourne Rowing Club on Sunday. Rowing in their Veteran D coxed four with Steve Tuck and Dave Truss, coxed by Anita Carter they beat Maidstone Invicta over Saturday’s 1000m course and Star Club in Sunday’s 500m final. The four teamed up with Pete Dolby, Ian Palmer and Ian Davis and Lincoln Rowing Centre’s Bruce Margetts to win the Men’s Veteran C/D coxed eight against Maidstone Invicta on the Saturday, and on Sunday they made it an all-Peterborough Crew with Peter Todd to once again beat Maidstone Invicta, this time coxed by Lewis Tuck on the sprint course.
The Tuck family tally of winning pots reached six with Sam Tuck, doubling with Ollie Salonna, having three wins over the weekend in the Junior 15 double sculls on both days, and the Junior 16 double sculls on Saturday. Further Junior sculling wins were achieved by Meghan Lawless in the Women’s Junior 13 single sculls, who then teamed up with Gemma Titchmarsh to win the double sculls against Broxbourne RC, and by Anna Sidebottom and Holly Barr in the Junior 14 double sculls.
The Senior crews also had a good weekend with the Women’s Senior 2 coxed four of Claire Hartley, Nikki Williams, Bridge Lloyd, Sarah Cook and cox Kate Wallace beating Barnes Bridge Ladies Rowing Club on Saturday and beating the Peterborough/Newark composite in Sunday’s final.
The Men’s Senior 4 coxed four final was also an all-Peterborough affair, after crews from Leeds and Norwich were knocked out in earlier rounds. The final had added interest with David Todd against older brother Peter, when only a fortnight ago they had won their Novice event in the same crew. The winners were David Todd, Mark Pocock, Owen Evans and Peter Barratt, coxed by Ella Lamming and they continued their form on Sunday to win the Men’s Senior 3 coxed four against Leicester Rowing Club.
Further wins came from the veterans with Graham Timms winning the Men’s Veteran Senior 3 single sculls on Saturday, and Anita Carter winning the Women’s Veteran Senior 3 single sculls on Sunday. An unexpected win came in the Men’s Veteran B double sculls event, which originally didn’t have a Peterborough crew entered. A last-minute scratch found Huntingdon seeking opposition to race, which they found in Peterborough’s Ian Palmer and St Neots’ Andy Major who formed a winning substitute crew.
Also worthy of mention are the Women’s Novice coxed four who reached the final in their first regatta.
Photos of the regatta can be found on www.mrzip.co.uk/rowing/index.htm

Llandaff Regatta
The trip to Wales at the weekend paid off for the Men’s Novice coxed four of David Todd, Peter Todd, Darren Rowe, James Bizley and cox Tom Elston when they beat Ironbridge Rowing Club at the second time of asking in the final.Initially they dead-heated and so were sent back to re-row the final on the 650m river course. Their fitness paid off and they beat Ironbridge by a length in the rerow.
07 Jul - Champions!
First ever Peterborough winners at Henley
Congratulations to our Peterborough boys James Fox and Adam Neill and their crewmates Johnny Walton from Leicester and George Caines from Nottingham who beat Marlow RC 'A' by 1 length yesterday to win the Fawley Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta.
It was the first time in the club history that we've had a win at Henley Royal Regatta when Adam and James went one better than last year. As stated by the Daily Telegraph "Peterborough City and Nottingham's juniors were the crew of the regatta".
Further details on their row to victory will follow... but in the meantime see the photos in the gallery.
29 Jun - Women show iron will
Ironbridge Regatta
The women had four wins at the club's annual camping weekend at Ironbridge regatta.
The Women's Senior 3 coxed four of Claire Hartley, Nikki Williams, Bridge Lloyd and Sarah Cook with cox Kate Wallace showed their iron will when they came from behind to beat Pengwern BC by one length in the final of the 1000m on Saturday. On Sunday they beat Warwick BC by 1.5 lengths.
The crew also raced in the Women's Senior 2 coxed eight stroked by Hayley Marsters with Jo Canton, Tracey Radnall and Hannah Davies, and were successful both days beating Ross Rowing Club by 0.25 length on Saturday, and on the Sunday by 0.66 length after putting a harder push in after the start on the 500m course.
Though not bringing home pots, Graham Timms in the Senior 4 single sculls on Saturday, and the Novice coxed four and Veteran C coxed four on Sunday, all beat opponents to reach the finals.
28 Jun - Silver and Bronze at J14
Peterborough Junior 14 Regatta
James Marshall and Matthew Hart picked up silver in the J13 double sculls and Meghan Lawless got a bronze in the J13 single sculls at Peterborough Junior 14 Regatta on Saturday.

21 Jun - Win and a second-place for quad sculls
Marlow International Regatta
Peterborough City Rowing Club's all conquering under 15 quad sculling crew continued their run of wins this weekend at Marlow International Regatta.
The win for the crew of Jack Hunt pupils Sam Tuck, Tom Chung and Ollie Salonna and King’s School’s Ed Rippon was particularly impressive as they were racing in the under 16 event.
Racing over the 2000 metre, 7 lane Olympic course at Dorney Lake, they overcame strong crews from Windsor Boys School and King’s School Worcester to progress straight through to the final.
The strongest opposition in the final came from top London club Tideway Scullers and from Tiffin School. Despite being behind to the London crew at the 1000 metre point, they pulled through to win in a time of 6 minutes 52 seconds.
The crew, who started the year as Runners Up in the Evening Telegraph Sports Awards Team of the Year category, are so far unbeaten. Only two weeks ago they won the under 15 National Schools title beating their nearest opposition by 18 seconds and smashing the course record for the event by a massive 16 seconds.
This performance was enough to convince coach Ian Palmer that they should enter this year’s Henley Royal Regatta. They will enter The Fawley Challenge Cup for under 19 Quad Sculls, this despite the youngest member of the crew Sam Tuck still only being 14.
Unless they are pre-selected after this weekend’s win they will race a qualifying event on Friday.
Adam Neill and James Fox were also in action in the under 18 Quad Sculls event in a composite crew with oarsmen from Leicester and Nottingham Rowing Clubs. They finished second in their final to a crew from the Royal Dutch Rowing Federation. This crew are also hoping to have done enough to be pre-selected for the Fawley Cup at Henley and avoid having to race the qualifying event.
15 Jun - Five medal haul for Veterans
National Veteran Championships
The Club won gold and four silvers at the National Veteran Championships held in Nottingham on Sunday [15 June 2008].Ian Palmer won gold in the Men’s Veteran B single sculls event against last year’s winner Jones from Grosvenor. Palmer gained revenge on Jones, who had earlier beaten him into silver in the Men’s Veteran A single sculls event after Palmer was disrupted by wash from a launch. In the Veteran B final the water stayed calm and he beat Jones into second-place by two seconds, ensuring the medal was gold this time.
Graham Barks and Pete Essex won silver in the Men’s Veteran D double sculls, finishing second to an impressive Runcorn. Runcorn beat Peterborough into second once more in the Mixed Veteran C quadruple sculls. The RAF/Lincoln/Peterborough composite crew of Tim Ellis, Bruce Margetts, Hayley Marsters and Jo Canton rowed through a tiring Grosvenor crew to bag silver.
Tim Ellis and Jo Canton picked up their second silver sculling in the Mixed Veteran C double sculls, who as ever met their nemesis Wycliffe College Boat Club in the final but comfortably held off the Canterbury Pilgrims/Henley composite crew and the Ancholme double.

Both Adam Neill and James Fox came away with three wins apiece, and Philippa Neill won twice to give the Neill family a total of five wins for the weekend.
The prospective Henley quad was given a successful outing on Saturday with Adam Neill and James Fox being joined by George Caines from Nottingham Rowing Club and Jonny Walton from Leicester Rowing Club to win the Men’s Senior 2 quadruple sculls against Ardingly and Royal Chester rowing clubs.
Neill and Fox both had convincing single sculling wins, with Adam winning his Senior 1 single sculls races on both Saturday and Sunday, and James winning his Junior 16 single sculls over the 1000m. Ian Palmer won the Men’s Veteran B single sculls events over both distances, and the winner of the Veteran C single sculls on both days was Peterborough-based sculler Tim Ellis, racing for the RAF.
James Fox’s third win came on Sunday in the Junior 16 double sculls with Tom Chung with an easy win over Northampton Rowing Club.
Philippa Neill had wins in the Women’s Junior 16 double sculls with Esme Marais and in possibly the closest Peterborough win of the regatta in the Mixed Senior 3 double sculls final with Sam Tuck. In a tight race they were beaten over the line by Leicester, who were then disqualified for crossing lanes and impeding, to award both Tuck and Neill their second win of the day. Earlier, Sam Tuck won the Junior 15 double sculls final comfortably with crewmate Ollie Salonna.
A further double sculls win was also notched up by Jo Canton and Hayley Marsters, beating clubmates Joan Heath and Anita Carter by one second, and Sudbury Rowing club, in the final of the Women’s Veteran double sculls.

National Schools Regatta events at Eton
Sam Tuck, Tom Chung, Ed Rippon and Ollie Salonna, coxed by Kate Wallace won the re-run of the National School's Junior 15 coxed quadruple sculls at Dorney Lake on Saturday [7th June 2008]. The National Schools Regatta held at Holme Pierrepont on 23rd to 25th May was abandoned during the second day of racing, owing to dangerous conditions. However their chance to shine came when some of the abandoned crew-boat racing was re-run this weekend at Dorney Lake. The crew ripped apart the other five finalists, beating second-placed Windsor Boys School by 17 seconds in the final and also smashed the event record by 15 seconds to finish in 6 minutes 39.5 seconds.24 May - Double at Donny

The other half of Peterborough's Men's eight had a close finish in the Men's Veteran D coxed fours final where they were beaten by Sheffield.
23 May - Gold and Bronze at National Schools Regatta
Nottingham falls victim to bad weather again
Tom Chung won gold in the Junior 15 single sculls at National Schools Regatta. He "eclipsed" Moon from King's School Canterbury and Harry Neale from Norwich to finish over four seconds ahead of the field on the 1000m course. Sam Tuck and Ollie Salonna got bronze in the Junior 15 double sculls, finishing behind Maidstone Invicta and Molesey in the finals.
Unfortunately Adam Neill missed out of the medals when he was given fourth place on his time trial time in the Championship single sculls. High winds meant racing was abandoned after the time trials on Saturday. This meant Philippa Neill and James Fox due to race on the Sunday in their respective J16 single events and the Junior 15 coxed quad were unable to show their stuff. The good news for the quad is they'll get their chance to row their event at Dorney on 7 June.
17 May - Good Time at Tees
Tees Regatta
Peterborough City Rowing Club's first visit to Tees Regatta was a great success with six wins in total and all City competitors returning back home with a pot.Tim Lloyd won his Veteran Novice single sculls, convincingly beating his York and Teeside opponents in the 850m final on a drizzly day that had tricky cross-tail gusting wind conditions. This was then followed by the customary celebratory dip for losing his novice status in a somewhat chilly Tees.
Women's Veteran F sculler Joan Heath had her first win after a sixteen-year break, beating Wilkinson from Tees by more than the handicap in the Women's Veteran E/F single sculls.
Tim Ellis racing for the RAF had two wins, the first by beating Ancholme Rowing Club in the final of the Mixed Veteran double sculls in a Peterborough/RAF composite with Jo Canton, and second by beating Ancholme RC and Chester-le-Street ARC in the Men's Veteran C single sculls.

However, after initially being slightly down they rowed through the Durham crew and held off further challenges to win.

This will provide those vets who have not been rowing all their lives the chance to race against others in the same situation. The Rod Glover Trophy will be presented to the winning veteran novice four.
Also, there will be a range of mixed events, which do not count for racing status, over the sprint course offering fun racing but no points!

There were also very strong performances from the club's womens senior 3 8, coming second out of 15 entries, and the J15 quad racing in the senior 3 event also coming second behind a Thames RC/Imperial College crew from London.
A feature of this years event was the particularly high standard of competitor taking part. Olympic Gold Medallist Kieran West took part in the singles event together with other top single scullers from his club, Imperial College. In the 8's event there was strong competition for the Headship between the holders, Agecroft, and challengers from Molesey, Lea, Imperial College and Eton College. In the end Agecroft, from Manchester, held off Molesey to keep the top spot for another year. Eton College was the top school narrowly beating St. Pauls.

03 Jan - Boxing Day Football Match
A Close Fought Match
On Boxing Day the traditional football match was held against Peterborough Rugby Club. This year saw a sterling performance by the rowing club which was outnumbered but displayed superior skill. The score was 6 - 6 with about 3 minutes to go but unfortunately the tiring rowers could not hold off a final attack by the rugby boys.
The Tuck family, father Steve and sons Sam and Lewis, were prominent but new boy Peter Todd got stuck in and succeeded in knocking a few over the opposition! Steve Ackerman, George Chung and Ollie Salonna also showed good skill.
03 Jan - New Year's Day Race 2008
The annual New Year's Day Race was held over the traditional 3000 metre course and there were 11 crews participating some with more hangover than others! The handicap start saw the oldest competitors, Brian Hawden and David Rowe, set off first and this time in calm conditions held on to their lead all the way to the finish. There were being caught rapidly by a womens double and a veteran coxless 4 resulting in one of the closest finishes in years. In fact all the other crews finished within a minute of the winners.
Brian and David enjoyed the usual prize of beer in the bar after!
