Wallingford Long Distance Sculls
James Fox broke the course record by nearly three seconds when he won the Senior Single sculls at Wallingford Long Distance Sculls on Saturday.
James finished the 4000m upstream Thames course in 14 mins 11.3 secs, two seconds ahead of Moody from Upper Thames, becoming the fastest ever single sculler to race the course. Previously the fastest time of 14 mins 14 secs was set in 2002 by Senior 1 sculler Collins from Molesey. The Junior sculler could even have even set a better time if he’d negotiated the last bend of this unfamiliar challenging river course more smoothly in the testing cross-tailwind conditions.
City also had good results in the Junior 17 single sculls, packed with GB-junior squad scullers, with Tom Chung finishing fourth in 15 mins 10.4 secs, and Sam Tuck ninth in 15 mins 30.9 secs out of the 36 racing in their event. Tim Ellis was second in the Veteran C single sculls, with the handicap-adjusted time of 14 mins 48.7 secs.
13 Sep - Seven up at Cambridge
Cambridge Autumn Regatta
City brought a successful regatta season to a close with seven wins at Cambridge Autumn Regatta on Sunday.

The crew of Hayley Marsters, Jo Canton, Anita Carter, Joan Heath and cox Kate Wallace comfortably beat Xpress in the semi-final, to then convincingly beat the less-experienced Cambridge 99 crew in the CRA women’s coxed fours final.
After some emergency repairs on their steering line on the way up to the start by Peterborough’s boatman Steve Taylor, the Women’s Intermediate 3 coxed four with the crew of Sally Wallace, Megan Rogers, Annabell Pitcher and Ericha Knowles coxed by Matt Newton kept their cool and beat Milton Keynes in a straight final on the 600m River Cam course.
City’s Women’s Junior 15 coxed quadruple sculls crew of Eloise Austin, Meghan Lawless, Paige Phillips and Georgia Swain, coxed by Serena Ward beat Broxbourne Rowing Club in their straight final, and then Meghan Lawless and Paige Phillips picked up a second win, again beating Broxbourne, in the final of the Women’s Junior 15 double sculls.
The Junior crew of James Marshall, Matt Hart, Harry Veal-Gray and Daniel Richardson, coxed by Chris Defreitas, also beat Broxbourne to win their straight final of the Junior 14 coxed quadruple sculls.
Veteran scullers Graham Barks and Pete Essex probably had the closest race, when they won by just one foot against the Broxbourne double in the final of the Veteran D double sculls.
03 Sep - Tim's a World Champion
FISA World Masters Regatta, Vienna
Tim Ellis won gold in the Veteran C single sculls at the FISA World Masters Regatta held in Vienna, Austria. The regatta for veterans, held from 3rd to 6th September, is raced over a 1000m course in a different country each year, and attracts crews from all over the world.
Tim, racing for the Royal Air Force, was level with about 250 m to go but then upped the rate to win in a time of 3 mins 48.41 secs, over four seconds ahead of the second-placed german sculler from TU Dresden in the eight-lane final.
Peterborough City were second in four of their events. In the Women’s coxed eights, racing as part of a composite Cambridge clubs/Leicester/Peterborough crew, they had second places in the Women’s Veteran A, B and C events with Hayley Marsters in all three crews, Jo Canton in B and C events, and Anita Carter in the A event. In the Women’s Veteran B coxed eights the crew only just missed out on gold by 0.76 of a second to an Estonian/Latvian composite crew, after being just in the lead at 500m. Joan Heath finished second in her Women’s Veteran F single sculls event, with her sprint finish pushing her up from third place.
Tim Ellis was also fifth in the Veteran C double sculls with Steve Tuck, and third with Joan Heath in the Mixed Veteran D double sculls. Hayley and Jo also picked up 3rd place in their Women's Veteran C pairs.
09 Aug - Summer's Super Seven
Peterborough Summer Regatta
We had seven wins at Peterborough Summer Regatta.
Sarah Smith’s first regatta back after her second baby was a great success when she won the Women’s Intermediate 3 coxed four with Amanda Gopaul, Sarah Waghorn (rowing for RAF) and Hannah Davies, coxed by Lewis Tuck on Saturday’s 1000m course. The crew finished three seconds ahead of Globe RC in 3 mins 55 secs, with Twickenham and City of Oxford third and fourth. It was also a special race for Amanda Gopaul, as she lost her rowing novice status and received the customary dunking in the lake. (See Photo gallery for picture of the winning crew.)
Also winning on Saturday were Sam Tuck, Chris Lutterodt and cox Lewis Tuck, in a composite Men’s Intermediate 3 coxed four with James Jarratt and Thomas Eames from Tideway Scullers School, in 3 mins 27 secs. They beat a Churchill composite by four seconds into second-place, with City of Cambridge third and Broxbourne fourth.
On Sunday, another novice dunking was required when the Novice double sculls event was won by juniors Jack Greenway and Ashley Piper, who beat City of Sheffield into second, with Wolfson College third and Derby fourth.
Ashley was also in the winning Peterborough/Leicester composite Men’s Intermediate 3 coxed eight of Matthew Barrow, Dave Todd, Mark Pocock, Alex Stephenson-Brown (Leicester), Ben Feighery, James Bizley and Will Roberston, coxed by Ella Lamming, who had such a close race with City of Cambridge they hadn’t realised they’d won until hearing the announcement 500m after the finish line. Sudbury were third and Nottingham Rowing Club were fourth.
Joan Heath beat younger scullers to win the Women’s Veteran D/E single sculls by clear water against Lea, Star Club and St Neots.
Graham Barks and Pete Essex won the Veteran C/D double sculls, beating city Veteran C double of Tim Ellis and Steve Tuck, and gaining revenge on the Poplar and Blackwall double scullers, who won the Veteran D/E race on Saturday when they had the benefit of their Veteran E handicap.
Meghan Lawless and Paige Phillips won the Women’s Junior 14 double sculls, beating Isle of Ely, fellow city scullers Holly MacFarlane and Eloise Austin, and Nottingham in the straight final.
The Victor Ludorum was won by Nottingham Rowing Club.

On Saturday, over the 1000m course, a composite Women’s Intermediate 1 coxed eight with Hayley Marsters and Jo Canton won their event beating Barnes Bridge Ladies. They then teamed up with Leicester rowers Liz Pulford and Sally Horrocks to win the Women’s Veteran C/D event beating Oundle Town in the final after overcoming a handicap of 9 seconds to beat Star Club in the heat.
A fourth rowing win was recorded by the Veteran C coxed four of Steve Ackerman, Matt Barrows, Neil Elder and Keith Blackman, coxed by Ella Lamming on Sunday’s 500m course, when they beat Globe RC in the final.
Veteran D double scullers Graham Barks and Pete Essex won on both Saturday and Sunday, meeting and beating Milton Keynes in both finals.
The Junior 14 coxed quad had one of the hardest of wins racing against Oundle Town RC, in what was Peterborough’s only straight final, when they dead-heated. James Marshall, Matt Hart, Josh Codd and Dominic Manganiello, coxed by Lucille Kenny then had to return to the start to rerow the 1000m race, this time beating Oundle Town.
James Marshall and Matt Hart had a total of three wins, winning in the quad, the Junior 14 double sculls on Saturday against a Cantabrigian/City of Cambridge composite, and the Junior 13 double sculls on Sunday against Oundle Town. In his semi-final on the Friday, with racing delayed by thunder storms earlier in the day, he had finished second behind Exeter RC’s Bowyer, knowing that the first three scullers would qualify for the final.
Meghan Lawless won her heat on the Friday, in the third fastest time, to qualify for Saturday’s final of the Women’s Junior 14 single sculls. She finished second to the Hollingworth Lake sculler Jessica Leyden, who dominated the race finishing over 28 seconds ahead of the field. At the 1000m mark, Meghan was in third place, 2.5 seconds behind Tees-sculler Imogen Leigh sitting in second, but rowed through her in the second half of the race to be one second up at the 1500m mark and then maintained that gap to finish in 10 mins 51.6 secs and win the silver medal.
12 Jul - Two Quarts wins and Runner's up at Henley Vets
Bedford Quarts Sprint & Henley Veterans regattas
Pete Dolby and Ian Davis won Veteran B/C pairs at Bedford Quarts Sprint Regatta, on Sunday, beating the Veteran B Lincoln/RAF composite of Bruce Margetts and Chris Morrill in the final by 1 length in 2 mins 17 secs in windy conditions over the 600m upstream course.
Jo Canton got Peterborough’s second win of the day in the Mixed Intermediate 1 double sculls final with Bruce Margetts from Lincoln Rowing Centre, beating Margetts’ pairs partner Chris Morrill, from RAF, and Lincoln sculler Lou Elkington, by 1 ½ lengths in 2 mins 15 secs.
Peterborough also had finalists in the Veteran C coxed eights and Veteran D coxless fours, but tired legs from racing at Henley Veterans regatta the previous two days, and racing in heats into a strong headwind, took it’s toll.
At Henley Veterans regatta on Saturday, Ian Palmer was runner-up in the Men’s Veteran A single sculls to Van De Giessen from Vereniging Veteranen Roeiers, from Belgium. In the Veteran B single sculls he lost to the eventual winner from Ryde in the first round on Friday.
Pete Essex and Graham Barks had a tough final, after winning comfortably in the previous two rounds, but though they fought hard, they couldn’t overcome Breda from Holland in the final of the Men’s Veteran D double sculls.
Hayley Marsters and Jo Canton racing in a composite crew with Liz Pulford and Sally Horrocks from Leicester Rowing Club had a good race in the final of the Women’s Veteran C coxless fours, being up at around 250m but ended up losing by 1 ¼ lengths to a strong Tideway Scullers crew. The crew then split into pairs and raced each other in the Women’s Veteran C coxless pairs final, with the Leicester crew beating Peterborough.
Joan Heath and Tim Ellis, racing in a Peterborough/RAF composite, reached the semi-finals of the Mixed Veteran D double sculls. They led off the start but were overtaken just after the barrier by a brother and sister composite crew from Tideway Scullers and Parrs Priory, losing by 1 length. Tim Ellis, racing for the RAF, also reached the quarter-finals of the Veteran C single sculls, but was knocked out by the eventual winner Pike from Ryde.
12 Jul - GB win for Tuck
GB v France U16 Match
Sam Tuck stroked the GB quad to victory in the GB v France Under 16 Match held in Cardiff on Sunday.

The GB Women's quad from Nottingham didn't fare so well in the waves of Wales, sinking as they drew up to the landing stages!
05 Jul - Chung reaches Henley Semi-finals
Henley Royal Regatta Results
Tom Chung reached the semi-finals of the Fawley Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta sculling for Peterborough in the composite Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club and Leander Club crew.
They had a bye to the second round where they easily beat Borlase's and Maidenhead RC in 7 mins 9 secs, they then met Sydney RC who had previously beaten Ed Rippon's Bewl Bridge and Peterborough crew by 3 lengths in 7 mins 12 secs. Ed's crew had met with Sam Tuck's Tideway Sculler's School crew in the first round and in a tight race beat them by half a length in 7 mins 13 secs.
In the quarter-finals, Tom's crew beat Sydney by 3 3/4 lengths in 7 mins 12 secs to then meet Melbourne Grammar school in the semi-finals. Unfortunately this was where their Henley racing ended for them, when they were beaten by half a length. Melbourne Grammar School then lost to Westminster School by half a length in Sunday's final. Full results of the Fawley Challenge Cup can be found here.
James Fox reached the quarter-finals sculling for Peterborough in the composite Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School and The King’s School Ely crew in the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup for Intermediate Men's Quadruple sculls . In their first round they beat U.S.R Triton, Holland by 1 1/2 lengths in 6 mins 40 secs and then met London R.C. & Old Collegians B.C., Ireland crew in the quarter-final. The crew, who are all juniors but were excluded from entering the Fawley, always knew this would be a tough race, but rowed well and lost by 3/4 length, the winning time being 6 mins 52 secs. The winner of the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup was Durham University and Oxford Brookes University who beat Leander Club by two lengths in the final. Full results of the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup can be found here.

29 Jun - Celebratory soaking for Women's Novices
Ironbridge Regatta
Peterborough Women's Novice coxed four got a good soaking at the club's annual camping trip to Ironbridge, Shropshire – not from rain, but by the traditional celebration of being thrown in the river when losing their Novice rowing status.
Sally Wallace, Megan Roberts, Ericha Knowles and Annabell Pitcher coxed by Kate Wallace had good wins in their heats and then beat Stourport Rowing Club by over a length in the final of the Women’s Novice coxed fours Sprint at Ironbridge Regatta on Sunday. Fellow city rowers then helped them celebrate by throwing them in the River Severn. See the Photo gallery for our soggy stars of the weekend.
Also reaching finals were the Men’s Veteran C coxed fours, with Angus Marshall, Pete Harris, Hugo Spiegl and Rob Florance on the Saturday, and Matt Barrows, Rob Florance, Neil Elder and Keith Blackman on the Sunday, but both crews were beaten by Stourport. Pete and Hugo lost their final of Veteran C double sculls to Loughborough by a length.
Angus Marshall got to the semis in the Novice single sculls on Sunday and the two Novice men's fours raced competitively but were beaten by better crews. Ella Lamming continued to display her expert steering skills without the aid of a rudder in the Women's Novice double sculls with Ericha Knowles, but met a good Ironbridge crew in the first round. Matt Barrows made a rare appearance racing in a single scull for Peterborough but maintained his Novice sculling status.
27 Jun - Eight medal haul for Juniors
Peterborough Junior Championship
We won one gold, two silver and three bronze medals at the Peterborough Junior Championship held on Saturday.
Going one better than last year, James Marshall and Matt Hart won gold in the Junior 13 double sculls. It was a clean sweep for Peterborough in this event, with Dominic Manganiello and Daniel Richardson winning silver and Josh Codd and Harry Veal-Gray getting bronze. James Marshall also won silver in the Junior 13 single sculls and Harry Veal-Gray won bronze, with Matt Hart finishing fourth. Jemma Codd and Abigail Fletcher also did well to reach the final of the Junior 12 double sculls, finishing fourth in this new event.
Bronzes were also won by Meghan Lawless in the Women's Junior 14 single sculls, Georgia Swain in the Women's Junior 13 single sculls and in the Junior 13 coxed quad of Dominic Manganiello, Chris De Freitas, Daniel Fardey and Will Hayes coxed by Holly McFarlane.
The winners of the Bursary were Jones from Nottingham RC for the Junior 14 single sculls and and Leigh from St Peters School for the Women's Junior 14 single sculls (A Division), who was fastest of the two Women's Junior 14 single sculls events (Boston sculler Housam won the B division).
Winners of the Victor Ludorum were Headington School, with Peterborough City runners up. The Watermanship medal went to Sir William Perkin's School for their Women's Junior 14A coxed octuple sculls and the Coxing medal went to Champion of the Thames for the cox of the Women's Junior 13A coxed quadruple sculls.
Full results can be found here and the Peterborough Evening Telegraph report can be found here. Photos taken by Mr Zip can be found here.
20 Jun - HRR hopefuls race at Marlow
Marlow Regatta
Peterborough City scullers had promising results at Marlow Regatta racing in their crews entered for Henley Royal Regatta.
Sam Tuck raced for Tideway Scullers in the Junior 16 quadruple sculls, finishing second (6.35.33) behind Windsor Boys School (6.30.93), but comfortably ahead of the other crews. They will now be racing in the Qualifiers at Henley on Friday evening to secure a place in the Fawley Challenge Cup event.
Tom Chung competed in the Junior 19 quadruple sculls in an Evesham, Leander, Hollingworth Lake and Peterborough City RC composite, finishing third behind Royal Dutch Rf Vendel (the Dutch national squad crew) and a York City/Chester/Llandaff/Yarm Composite crew. This good result probably gained them their pre-qualification place in the Fawley Challenge Cup for Henley Royal Regatta.
James Fox finished fifth in the Elite quadruple sculls final (6.02.81) after winning their heat to reach the final in the composite Peterborough RC, King’s School Ely, Agecroft RC, Sir William Borlase’s crew. They too have pre-qualified, but as a result of representing Great Britain at the recent Junior regatta in Munich, James cannot defend his Fawley win, and so the crew is entered into the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup, for Men’s quadruple sculls.
Another Henley hopeful from Peterborough is Ed Rippon, who will also be racing in the Fawley Cup Qualifiers at Henley in a Bewl Bridge and Peterborough composite crew with Leander Club scullers.
It will be a busy weekend for Sam and Ed, on Sunday they will be competing in qualifying races to represent Great Britain in the Junior 16 Anglo-French Regatta. Both scullers won gold in the Quadruple sculls in the Anglo-French last year, but this time Sam Tuck will be aiming to qualify in a quad with Tideway Sculler’s School and Ed Rippon in the single sculls for Peterborough City RC.
19 Jun - City qualify at Women's Henley
Henley Women's Regatta
Our Women's Senior coxed four crew raced in the Frank Harry Cup at Henley Women's Regatta today [Friday 19 June 2009].
Claire Hartley, Nikki Williams, Bridge Lloyd and Sarah Cook, coxed by Kate Wallace were in the top 16 crews that qualified in this morning’s time trial over the 1500m Thames course to proceed to the heats of the Senior coxed fours.
In their heat [this afternoon], with a strong cross-head wind and bouncy river conditions, they had a good row racing against Maidenhead Rowing Club, but were beaten by two lengths. Maidenhead, who finished in a time of 6 mins 7 secs, will now meet a Furnivall and Mortlake composite crew in the quarter-finals tomorrow [Saturday].
14 Jun - Two golds for Oldies
National Veteran Championships
We won two golds at the National Veteran Championships at Holme Pierrepont at Nottingham.
Ian Palmer won the Veteran A single sculls event, beating Jones from Grosvenor RC by one second to win in 3 mins 47 secs in a five-lane final. In the final of the Veteran B single sculls event 35 minutes later, with both scullers having won their respective semi-finals in the morning, Jones got his revenge and Palmer had to settle for silver. It was a reverse of last year’s results where Palmer won the Veteran B event and Jones the younger Veteran A category, showing how closely matched these two scullers are.
Another close race saw Hayley Marsters and Jo Canton win gold in the Women’s Veteran B coxed eights event, rowing in a composite crew with Leicester and Cambridge rowers. At 500m they were just half a second down in second-place but came through to finish two seconds ahead of the Medway Towns Composite in 3 mins 34 secs, with the other three finalists off the pace at the finish.
Peterborough-based Tim Ellis also won silver in the Veteran C Intermediate 3 single sculls for the RAF, finishing 3 seconds behind Hill from Grosvenor RC, but comfortably ahead of bronze-medallist Royles from Nottingham RC.
14 Jun - Six wins at Star

James Marshall beat Bradshaw from St Paul’s School in the semi-final, but then won his event by a ‘row over’ when the Star Club finalist scratched.
