News - 2010 Season
02 Dec - Junior triumph at British Indoor Rowing Championships
On Sunday 21st November 2010, the city’s rowing club headed to Birmingham to compete in the British Indoor Rowing Championships. The first races that Peterborough competed in were the junior individuals.
To start off with, Paige Phillips competed in the Women’s Junior 16 category (2000m). Paige showed her strength and determination in an elite field where she finished in 6th place. Next up was the Men’s Junior 11 and 12 categories (2 minutes) - an event which is an event with a burst of adrenaline which also shows enthusiasm for the sport. Ben Bastow and Thomas Marshall competed in this event. Ben performed well and showed good effort throughout his first race. Thomas fired off the start like a rocket and maintained a good pace, hanging on all the way to the finish. He finished 4th overall in his category. This was Thomas’ first race and at the age of 11 shows great potential for the club in the future and now has a good foundation to build on next year. Robert Baile, who is a regular attendee to the Peterborough indoor rowing league which is another major success, claimed gold in the Men’s junior 12 category.
In the Men’s Junior 13 category (3 minutes) – an event that many competitors go off the start like a rocket but few can actually hold it. Bradley Bucknell and Josh Smith competed from Peterborough in this event. Both athletes remained strong candidates throughout the course of the race and both performed well with Josh finishing 2nd in his heat and 5th place overall in the category which meant he just missed out of the medals. Bradley had a substantial amount of pressure after claiming a victory and a British record from last year’s event but pulled through to collect the gold for his category. Both competitors are bright prospects for the club’s future.
In the Women’s Junior 14 category (4 minutes), Camilla Plumb put in a good effort level from start to finish and had a strong steady pace throughout in her first indoor rowing race. Zara Plumb in the Women’s Junior 15 category (5 minutes) performed well again in her first indoor rowing race.
Finally in the junior individuals, the Men’s Junior 15 category (5 minutes), James Marshall, Harry Veal-Gray and Lewis Bucknell all performed well in a tough category. This category just highlighted the very high level of competition in Britain’s largest participatory event and the biggest indoor rowing race in the world. James came 2nd in his heat and 6th overall in the category. He was completely exhausted by the finish of the race. Harry came 10th in his heat and Lewis coming 6th also in the heat. The category was heavily crowded with quick times, close races and an eventful finish.
In the junior teams, the Women’s Junior 13 team (Niamh Khosla, Rebecca Anderson, Camilla Plumb and Emma Heyes) rowed well and showed slick changeovers throughout the race. In the Men’s Junior 13 category, both the ‘A team’ (Bradley Bucknell, Josh Smith, Jake Langham and Daniel Brown) and the ‘B team’ (James Newton, Thomas Marshall, Matt Smith and Piers Casey) did not give up and definitely made the club proud. The ‘A team’ blasted of the start and got an unassailable lead over the other teams and proved to be the absolute stars of the club when claiming the gold medal in the category. The ‘B team’ had two juniors in their team rowing up to the category so did very well racing above their age category.
Both the Women’s and Men’s junior 16 category produced some good racing. Both teams rowed well against tough oppositions and finished well. In the Men’s junior 14 and Women’s junior 15
teams consisted of athletes rowing above their age category. Both teams showed clean, quick changeovers and pulled through the race.
In all of the Men’s junior 15 teams (ABC), a neck and neck battle across the board was making this category a great contest between crews. The Men’s junior 15 ‘A team’ powered off the start with the other crews and towards the end strung together a relentless attack to claim the silver medal in the category. Both the ‘B and C teams’ pushed throughout, chasing the other crews all the way to the finish. Peterborough City Rowing Club works with local schools within the community which the club have close links with and encourages them to take part in this annual event. The Peterborough School claimed a gold medal in J12 individual (Robert Baile), silver medal in J12 boys team (Michael Heys, William Coulson, Rohan Khosla and Rhys Barnwell), gold medal in J11 boys team (Max Fisher, Edward Hill, Jack Gilbert and Rohit Sunku), silver medal in J12 girls team (Abigail Lucas, Tukiya Mukutuma, Paige Harris and Robyn Chapman-Burn), silver medal in J11 girls team (Tomi Kehindi, Upsana Das, Sophie Hobday and Fern Easton) and the J13 girls team narrowly missing out on a medal position (Aimee Parker, Amy Whitehead, Darcy Skelton and Melissa Ozmen) which shows the raw talent of young rowers in the schools and club in the city.
Overall, the standard of competition was fierce and the changeovers throughout everyone from Peterborough were very impressive. The city club has won the Men’s junior 12 category two consecutive years in with Robert Baile claiming the gold medal this year and James Marshall rowing in the category last year also claiming the gold medal.
30 Nov - Vet Four 'on fire' at snowy Head of Soar
PCRC have 4.5 wins at Loughborough
The snow, ice and cold could not prevent some very good rowing at Loughborough's Head of the Soar 2010 on 27th November.Building on their very good row in the Veteran's Head on the Tideway earlier this month, and proving that a boat can be off the trailer, rigged and on the water in under ten minutes, Keith Blackman, Glyn Reed, Colin Roberts, Steve Fox coxed by Kate Wallace won the Veteran's C/D handicap Coxed Fours' event. Their time of 11.44 made them the 5th fastest boat in the whole event. They were 45 seconds quicker than the crew from North Staffs RC who came in second place. Well done chaps! There were other wins for the men's squad with Jamie Davis and Jamie Gordon winning with IM1 and IM2 crews. A new boat and equipment for PCRC
The club has recently gained some much needed new equipment through grants and support. As you have probably all noticed the membership has continued to grow over the last year. This has been particularly true in the ladies’ squad. A new set of rowing blades, a cox box and two stroke coaches have been purchased, costing approximately £4500. Half the money came from Strategic Partnerships Ltd (Paul and Sheila Child’s company) and the other half being Sports matched by Sport England. Thanks to Ella Lamming, the Ladies’ Captain for putting together the bid and completing all the necessary paperwork. The aim of purchasing this equipment was to increase the active women’s membership at the club and bringing on people who have completed a learn to row course. As part of the bid there will be more ‘Ladies’ Days’ on the river. The next is 11th December.Oliver Shelley, the Men’s Captain, has also successful in securing a grant from Sport England. With the ‘100 Club’ providing half the necessary fund the club now has a new Coxless Pair. The ‘Tom Agutter’ was christened earlier this month and was taken for its first outing on the lake by Ian Davis and Matthew Barrows. One of the main aims of purchasing this boat and blades is to allow more people to learn to steer. The new boat was named after Thomas Agutter who was a founder member of PCRC in 1948 and a stalwart of the club until his death in 2004. He was also a member and supporter of the 100 Club.15 Oct - Season ends on a high note at Cambridge Autumn
12 more wins for the club
The club finished off the regatta season with another great day at Cambridge ending up with 12 wins. This took the total for the year to a fantastic 165 wins, just 10 short of the club's record.
Some highlights of the day were the wins in womens novice 4's and 8's meaning that 10 women lost their novice status. Some had raced all season. In the mens IM3 8's event the two Peterborough crews won through to the final to race each other. In the end Steve Ackerman's crew used their greater experience to pull away.
There were two wins for James Marshall and Matt Hart in doubles and quads to finish off a very successful season for the boys. Another notable doubles win was for John Bishop and Nick Hurford who won vet E doubles - it was their first win in years!
15 Oct - 2010 End of Season Ball
Members have plenty to celebrate!
The annual End of Season Ball was held on 9th October at the Orton Hall Hotel and nearly 100 members and guests enjoyed an evening to remember.
At the start of the evening the annual presentations were made and the season reviewed by Chairman John Canton and Oli Shelley and Ella Lamming, the Men's and Women's Captains. Hard work by members during the year was recognised.
After the 3 course dinner the notorious Golden Awards were made highlighting lack of ability to put tents up by Glyn Reed and very dubious steering during the season by Oli Shelley.
The evening finished off with dancing including a bit of formation dancing by the junior members! A great evening was had by all.
16 Sep - Ladies Day at Sudbury Regatta
Jo Canton hits 30 wins this season
It was certainly a profitable trip to Sudbury Regatta.
Jo Canton and Hayley Masters won in a Peterborough/Leicester composite crew in Women's Coxed Fours and Coxed Quads, Ella Lamming providing the steering. Jo pointed out it was her first ever race in a coxed quad.
This four were then joined by Annabell Pitcher, Ericha Knowles Megan Roger and Ella Lamming went from coxing to rowing to win the Women's Elite 8 events. Their races against Broxbourne and Sudbury in the final were fast and frantic affairs as the course was only 350 metres. The ladies would also like to say a huge thank you to Chris Gill who saved their day by agreeing to cox, and in the process won his first ever pot with a Peterborough Crew.
16 Sep - Another Peterborough Regatta, another Victor Ludorum
17 wins for PCRC at our home regatta
Congratulations to all the members who took part in the regatta. We won the Victor Ludorum for the second time in a row with a total of 17 wins across the two days of racing. There were several members racing for the first time so well done to them.
A special mention is deserved the Men’s Novice Eight who beat a crew from Reading RC by 1 second to lose their novice status. Racing up a status Matthew Barrows, Jamie Gordon, Owen Reed-Beadle all lost their novice sculling status in an IM3 coxless quad, James Clark steered the crew to a good 3 second victory over Reading RC in the final. On Saturday Meghan Lawless and Paige Phillips both made the final of the WIM3 Single sculls. Paige beat off a sculler from Rob Roy by 7 seconds to take victory. For the romantics amongst us it was also nice to see Paige team up with James Marshall to win the Open Double Sculls event over 500m on Sunday, all the other crews were all males. Well done to the 'love boat.'
After loosing his sculling novice at the June regatta Daniel Boyle lost his rowing novice satus in the Coxed Four event along with Ziguementos ‘Ziggy’ Pukas, Jacob Lunn and Adam Fox. Hayley strikes Gold, twice, in Canada
Hayley Marsters had a very trip to the World Masters Rowing Championship in Canada in early September. Hayley won two gold medals as part of a Women’s Masters B Eights on Thursday and Masters C Eights on Friday in a Barnes Bridge, Tideway Scullers, Strathclyde Park, Inverness, Leicester, Peterborough composite. She then joined with rowers from Inverness and Nottingham to claim silver in the Women’s Masters B coxed fours.Sadly it was not ‘plain rowing’ as St Catharines (near Toronto) was then affected on Saturday with strong winds from Hurricane Earl and racing was cancelled for the day which meant that Hayley was unable to race in Masters C coxed and coxless fours and the Masters E quad. However, Hayley we are all really happy for your success at the club. No doubt you, and others at the club, are already thinking about Poznan, Poland next year!07 Aug - Golden Athlete at World Championships
Live Result
A very big well done to Phillipa Neil who won Gold at the World Rowing Championships. (Live result recieved this afternoon in a text)28 Jul - St Neots Regatta
'Pimms o'clock' and 'bow ball to bow ball' all the way
It was "Pimms o'clock" and "bow ball to bow ball" all the way!
There were plenty of Pimm’s, sunshine and pots as Peterborough City Rowing Club put in a very strong performance this weekend at St Neots Regatta. With crews competing over 1000m on Saturday and 500m on Sunday there were plenty of successes, for a variety of crews.
There were very good performances from the men’s squad. Graham Barks won the Masters D Single sculls on Saturday and repeated his victory in the Masters D/E Single Sculls on Sunday. Tim Ellis was also victorious for Peterborough in the Masters C single sculls. Not to be outdone Daniel Boyle won the Junior 16 Single Sculls. The Master C/D Coxed Fours of Keith Blackman, Glyn Reed, Colin Roberts and Steve Fox, coxed by Kate Wallace took the spoils in their event.
Carrying on in the style they have become accustomed to, the Women’s Junior Coxed Quad of Georgia Swain, Ellie Austin, Paige Phillips and Gemma Titchmarsh cruised to a victory over Nottingham Rowing Club by five lengths. James Marshall and Matt Hart did it for the boys by winning in the Junior 15 double sculls events. Paige Phillips also came close to victory in the Women’s Junior 15 single sculls event. Her final against Boston Rowing Club was declared a dead heat and then Paige narrowly lost in the re-row. Sam Tuck was part of a Norwich/Peterborough composite crew that took first place in the Mixed IM3 Eights. Jo Canton teamed up with Bruce Margetts of Lincoln Rowing Club to take the glory in the Masters Mixed Double Sculls event.
On Sunday there were ten more victories to be had. The final of the Master’s C/D Coxed Fours featured two Peterborough crews. Eventually it was Keith Blackman, Glyn Reed, Colin Roberts and Steve Fox, coxed by Kate Wallace who came across the finish line first. The Women’s IM2 Coxed Four of Hannah Davies, Sally Wallace, Rebecca Chappell, Charlotte Laluna and cox Kate Wallace had two very good races on their way to the final. They took their final against Milton Keynes Rowing Club by ¾ of a length.
Smaller boats also did very well over the 500m course. James Marshall and Matt Hart repeated their Saturday success by winning in the Junior 15 double sculls events. Matt Hart then went out on his own to win the Junior 14 Single Scull category, beating Newark by 1¼ lengths in his final. Jo Canton and Bruce Margetts reached the final and beat Champion of the Thames. Graham Barks added to his Saturday pot with a victory in the Master’s D/E Single Sculls. Daniel Boyle won the IM3 Single scull by 4 lengths over a sculler from Hull University Boat Club. David Truss and Peter Essex won the Master’s D/E/F Coxless Pairs. They were matched in the Master’s B/C Coxless Pairs by Peter Dolby and Ian Davis who beat Norwich Rowing Club by ¾ of a length in their final.
The happiest crew of the day though were the Novice Coxed Four of David Talbot, Douglas Cameron, James Greenlay and Stewart Holmes. These four, coxed by John Canton beat Burton –Leander in their final to lose their novice status and as a consequence took a traditional dip in to the river.
27 Jul - British Rowing Championships
16th-18th July 2010
Peterborough City Rowing Club had three crews participating in the British Rowing Championships which was held at Strathclyde Country Park near Glasgow. The J15 Girls coxed quad crew consisted of Georgia Swain, Paige Phillips, Gemma Titchmarsh, Meghan Lawless and Serena Ward, coxswain. The J14 Boys coxed quad crew consisted of Daniel Richardson, Harry Veal-Gray, Matthew Hart, James Marshall and Matt Newton, coxswain. The J16 Boys single was Daniel Boyle. Following an early start on Friday morning, both crews took to the water for a practice outing having to endure harsh conditions- heavy rain showers and strong winds. In the afternoon both crews qualified straight to the final on Saturday avoiding the repechage (the girls finishing 2nd and the boys finishing 1st in their respective heats with the boys producing the fastest qualifying time in the event). Daniel Boyle came 13th but this was a tough position as only 12 qualified. This allowed the crews that had qualified straight to the final to have an evening relaxing before the finals. On Saturday both crews again took to the water for a final session of anticipation finals scheduled for late afternoon. The conditions once more proved difficult with rough water, strong winds and frequent heavy downpours of rain. In the J15 Girls final a powerful burst from the start led the girls into a neck and neck first 500m. They held onto a strong 3rd place into the second kilometre, showing their grit and determination. The final 500m was intense between the top five crews and the Peterborough crew couldn't quite hold on to their medal position. They put in a final burst at 300m and achieved a personal best time finishing a creditable 5th place in their toughest race to date. After a powerful start the Peterborough J14 Boys held their position in the leading group at 500m. By one kilometre marker the race for gold was clearly being fought between Peterborough and Hampton. Peterborough repeatedly pulled bow to bow with Hampton with sustained bursts but each time Hampton were able to hold them off and maintain a one length lead. With 250m to go and a length to pull back Peterborough mounted their final challenge on the gold medal and gained on the Hampton crew. Despite the sustained pressure they were unable to take the lead as they crossed the finish line. Peterborough J14 Boys took silver with their strongest performance yet.28 Jun - Ironbridge Regatta
PCRC prove they can stand the heat!
In the blistering heat of Saturday and Sunday several Crews from Peterborough City Rowing Club made the annual trip to Shropshire to compete at Ironbridge's Regatta.
The club performed very well over in the 1000m races that took place on the Saturday. The Open IM3 Eights was a victory for Peterborough as Keith Blackman, Will Robertson, Jamie Davis, Glyn Reed, James Bizley, Oliver Shelley, John Cameron and Matthew Barrows rowed to an easy victory over a crew from De Monfort University in the final. Keith Blackman and Glyn Reed were also part of a successful boat with Colin Roberts and Steve Fox who took the Masters D Coxed Four. Both of these crews were coxed by recent recruit to the club Gigi Florentin-Lee.
The ‘Pocket Rockets’ went off with full force in the Women’s IM2 Coxed Four. Ericha Knowles, Annabell Pitcher, Ella Lamming, Megan Rogers and cox Tracey Rushton-Thorpe beat teams from Ross and Worcester Rowing Club to come out on top in their category. The girls had previously won over 500m at Doncaster and Peterborough so were pleased they had proved themselves over a longer distance. However, the girls were disappointed though as they had too many points to compete on the Sunday due to a lack of opposition, given the heat perhaps this was a blessing in disguise.
On Sunday racing was over 500m and the Masters C Coxed Four of Keith Blackman, Glyn Reed, James Bizley and Matthew Barrows, coxed by Gigi Florentin-lee, were victorious over a crew from Abingdon Rowing Club, with another easy victory.
There were also good performances from newer members of the club. Last minute substitution, Aaron Taylor stroked the Men’s Novice Coxed Four of Doug Cameron, Stuart Holmes, Dave Talbot and cox Steve Pearce to the final. They narrowly lost to Hereford. The Women’s Novice Coxed Four of Tracey Rushton-Thorpe, Marie Southgate, Mandy Walters and Cathy Wilson lost in their semi-final to Worcester Rowing Club.
15 Jun - British Rowing Masters' Championships
On Sunday whilst the junior members of Peterborough City Rowing Club were recovering from their efforts at Star Regatta the some older members of the club were competing at the British Masters’ Rowing Championships at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham. In a year that saw record entries here were several successes for Peterborough on the 1000m course that prove it is not just junior members who can win from PCRC.Joan Heath and Anita Carter secured a Women’s Masters D Double Sculls events. David Truss and Peter Essex also gained a silver in the Master’s E Coxless Pairs. Tim Ellis who training at the PCRC rowing lake and was racing for the RAF was victorious in the Masters C Single competition.Jo Canton teamed up with Bruce Margetts from Lincoln Rowing Club sculled to a silver medal in the mixed Double Sculls. The Womens IM3 8+ also made it through to the finals on both days but failed to claim a pot to add to their victories in the coxed fours events. The WIM2 4+ set a new course record on the Sunday and the WIM3 4+ broke the 500m course record, previously held by Milton Keynes RC, by 6 seconds.

The girls won their heat over the 2000m metre course against 5 other crews in a time of 8:05 minutes beating a crew from Muckross by 4 seconds, and entered the final as the fastest qualifiers.
The final was delayed by an hour due to torrential rain. The girls eventually finished second, with a final time of 8:13 minutes, to a crew from Lattymer Upper School.
Well done girls!
22 Apr - Leicester Regatta
The first regatta of the summer season was a really positive experience for many of the competitors representing Peterborough City Rowing Club. The fairly straight 700m canal course and fantastic weather were good conditions and several crews were entered for rowing and sculling events, at all levels. A mix of junior and adult crews attended and several ‘pots’ were taken away.
For some of the juniors it was their first taste of competitive rowing. The boys’ J12 Coxed Quad of Bradley Bucknell, George Prodrick, Micheal Thomson and Matt Dodds coxed by Serena Ward won. Georgia Swain beat a rival from Trent RC in the Women’s J14 single scull final and Faizan Shah won in the boys’ J12 single scull competition. Tim Ellis and Joan Heath beat a crew from Ancholme Rowing Club in their heats before securing an easy win over their opposition from Champion of the Thames to win the Masters Mixed Double Sculls competition. Jo Canton and Hayley Marsters continued to build on their successful winter season in their Women’s Masters coxless 4 with rowers from Leicester by beating Oundle Town RC.
This regatta was also the first for some of the novice rowers as Marie Southgate and Anya Hebner joined with Sarah Bigham and Mandy Walters to compete in the Women’s novice coxed fours.
The happiest people on the day though were probably Ella Lamming and Ericha Knowles. The duo beat a crew from Boston Rowing Club to win the Women’s Novice Double Sculls, and therefore lost their novice status.
14 Apr - Bedford Head 11 April
Fantastic end of the head season
Peterborough City Rowing Club put in a very good performance in the last Head race of the season at Bedford. We had the highest number of entries on the day. The presence of Oliver Salonna, all the way from Dallas, USA, even got a mention on the British Rowing website. Despite the windy conditions the course of 1900m provided wins for several crews at all age levels and abilities.Hayley Marsters and Jo Canton in a composite crew with rowers from Leicester won the Women’s Masters C/D Coxed Fours in 8:23 minutes. Tim Ellis took first place in the Masters C Sculls and Graham Barks won the Master D sculls in 8:15 minutes. Peter Dolby and Ian Davis triumphed in the Masters B/C Coxless pairs with a time of 7:59 minutes. Dave Truss and Pete Essex were the fastest in the Masters D/E/F Coxless Pairs. There was also success for Dave Truss, Steve Tuck Pete Essex and Graham Barks in the Masters D/E Coxless Fours category. The Masters C/D/C Coxed Fours consisting of Keith Blackman, Glyn Reed, Colin Roberts and Steve Fox narrowly missed out on a win by one second, coming second to a crew from Marlow RC. There were also very good performances from the Junior squad as well. The Women’s Junior 15 Coxed Quad Sculls consisting of Georgia Swain, Gemma Titchmarsh, Paige Phillips, Megan Lawless with their cox Serena Ward, fended off seven other crews to win their category. The girls hope that this experience will help them this summer as they work towards competing at Royal Henley Regatta.
