On Saturday 22nd April, two Peterborough crews attended the Junior Inter Regional Regatta, which is a national event that only qualified crews can attend, and takes place at the National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepoint. The Peterborough athletes represented the Eastern Region at the championships, their points contributing to their region placing at 4th overall, out of the 12 regions. The J15 doubles partners Alex Leverage and James Toynton performed outstandingly at the event, finishing only 1 second away from a gold medal, however were still thrilled to receive a silver following their previous year of placing 4th.
Having not previously raced at this event, Harry Masterson, Benjamin Mackenzie, Jack Collins and Archie Sootheran had a good race in the B final along the 1500 metre course, finishing 8th out of 12 in their J16 quad.
Peterborough athletes dominated Leicester Regatta the following day, taking home 7 wins for the club, along with 10 second places. There were outstanding performances from the juniors, many leaving with not only one but two pots in their hands, of which most had to compete against their own Peterborough club mates to earn.
For the J16 girls this was double partners Georgina Parker and Hannah Bassett who won their heat against Norwich Rowing Club, carrying them through to the final where they beat their club mates Isabelle Van Biljon and Alexis Agidee. They were also joined by Olivia Hutchinson and Libby Jarvis in the women’s J16 quad final, where they beat Norwich Rowing club again for another victory.
Jack Collins beat his Peterborough opponent Damen Sanderson in the men’s novice final, and Harry Masterson also beat a Peterborough team mate Benjamin Mackenzie in the J16 singles final. Collins, Masterson and Mackenzie then joined Archie Sootheran to gain yet another victory in their Im3 coxless quad, beating Leicester Rowing club easily. Another IM3 victory came from Jenna Taylor, Sarah Watson, Alex Leverage and Jordan Beale in their mixed quad, where they beat Derwent in their straight final. The last win came from Will Kirby and Callum Scane, who easily beat their opponents in the J16 doubles final.
Second places came from Damen Sanderson in a scratch composite crew with fellow rowers Bruce Margetts (Lincoln), Chris Morrill (RAF) and Chris Tomlinson (RAF) in the Masters B coxed four, along with his second place in the novice single. There were second places in the girls’ doubles for, Eve Cresswell and Milly Hilton in their J14 double, Jenna Taylor and Leah Dennis in their J15 double and Isabelle Van Biljon and Alexis Agidee in their J16 double. There was also a second place for the J15 boys double of Tom Jackson and Connor Ribbons. |For the singles, the second places were for Finlay Ribbons in the J13 single, Thomas Bodily in the J14 single, Henry Barnett in the J15 single and Benjamin Mackenzie in the J16 single.
